They meet each other for the first time after the death of the protagonist. Kamalinee Mukherjee does the role of Pemmena from Kochi, Padmapriya acts as Revamma from Malabar, and Meenakumari as Kali from Travancore. The story is told from the eyes of the three heroines after the death of Kutty.
Mammootty sings a Chavaittu Natakam based song for this movie 'Kuttyshranku'. The movie is based on three climatic seasons and shot in three schedules. Mammootty appeared in a different get up for each of the schedules.
The first schedule was based on rainy monsoon days and was shot in the backwaters of Alappuzha during the rainy season in June, 2008. The shooting for the second schedule based summer season took place at Chavara and Sasthankotta near Kollam, during September 2008 and the final schedule depicting winter was shot in December 2008 at Kundapura near Mookambika.
The story of the movie develops in 1950s when there were no much developments in the road transport and people depends much on the waterways for transportation. The movie gives great importance to the ancient art forms of Kerala like 'Chavittunatakam' (a Christian dance form).
